Violence Against Women Is On The Rise

I was recently looking around the Internet for news on assaults against women for a research paper and came across a release by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

What are the types of violence against women?

Behaviors included in the broad category of violence against women include homicide, intimate partner abuse, psychological abuse, dating violence, same-sex violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, date rape, acquaintance rape, marital rape, stranger rape and economic abuse. The effects of this violence can negatively affect a woman’s reproductive health, as well as other aspects of her physical and mental well-being. Long-term risks include chronic pain, physical disability, drug and alcohol abuse and depression. Women with a history of physical or sexual abuse also have an increased risk for unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The vast majority of violence against females is perpetrated by males.

Campus Safety - Time To Prepare For On Campus Life

Does the thought of walking in a dark parking lot alone at night frighten you? If the situation should occur, do you feel confident and prepared to respond to an attacker? Sgt. Darren Laur and his wife Beth began teaching self-defense classes and leading safety seminars in 1993, providing instruction and training for thousands of women. Their concern for women’s safety led to the Laurs writing their newly published book, Total Awareness: A Woman’s Safety Book. Inside this book are ten essential safety tips that every woman should know in order to ensure greater personal safety.

  1. 1. Awareness:
Being observant and taking note of your surroundings is your first line of defense. While most women think of kicks to the groin and blocking punches when they hear the term self-defense, the best way to protect yourself is to avoid physical contact entirely. Being aware of your surroundings will allow you to anticipate a dangerous situation and circumvent the problem before it happens. Criminals are more likely to choose a victim who appears unaware of what is happening around them.

  1. 2. Use your sixth sense.
The “sixth sense” refers to an innate discernment you may have that lets you know something is wrong. The subconscious can provide powerful insight into a situation but very few people pay much attention it. Learn to “trust your gut” and avoid persons or situations that don’t feel right.

  1. 3. Self-defense training.
Before signing up for any self-defense program make sure you do a little research first and follow these two tips:
1)     Avoid martial arts studios if you are looking for simple defense techniques and not prepared for a long term commitment. Many of these programs teach techniques that are complex and unrealistic during the typical attacks women encounter.
2)     Make sure the self-defense program includes simulated assaults of realistic rape and attack scenarios so that you get to practice what you learn and adapt to the adrenaline rush.
