Preventing Thefts of Firearms from Vehicles, a New NSSF Brochure

Preventing Thefts of Firearms from Vehicles, a New NSSF Brochure

Firearms Safety in Vehicles brochure

NEWTOWN, Conn. — In response to the rising number of gun thefts from vehicles, the National Shooting Sports Foundation has produced a brochure designed to remind gun owners to take precautions if they must leave a firearm in their car or truck for any period of time.

The “Firearms Safety in Vehicles” brochure joins NSSF’s lineup of educational materials reminding gun owners that it’s their responsibility to keep their firearms out of the wrong hands.
The brochure emphasizes this key safety rule: “Your firearm must be under your control at all times; when it’s not, it should be placed in locked storage and out of sight.”

NSSF notes that vehicle door locks and trunk locks don’t turn cars and trucks into gun safes. The same goes for glove boxes and console compartments.

“If you must temporarily store a gun in your car or truck, for your safety and that of our community, we encourage you to take steps to properly store them,” reads the brochure. “Use a secure storage device, keep [the gun] out of sight, try not to be away from the vehicle for an extended length of time, and, when you arrive home, take the firearm inside with you to your secure home storage area.”
The most practical device for storing a firearm temporarily in a vehicle is a lockable gun case or a lock box, which come in a range of sizes and prices. Some lock boxes can be secured to the vehicle with a steel cable, for example.

The new Firearms Safety in Vehicles brochure is available in print and downloadable pdf versions on the NSSF literature website. A discount is applied to volume orders of the print version.

Doctor Responds to AMA’s Anti-Gun Stance

Doctor Responds to AMA’s Anti-Gun Stance

Doctor Responds to AMA’s Anti-Gun Stance
It’s no secret that the American Medical Association (AMA) has often taken a decidedly anti-gun stance, calling “gun violence” a public health crisis rather than the criminal violence problem that it actually is. But that approach isn’t flying with some medical professionals. Here is a letter one person wrote to rebut the AMA’s recent editorial on guns.

I couldn’t sit back and ignore what I’ve just read. A mass editorial, entitled “Death by Gun Violence—A Public Health Crisis,” was recently published by the AMA. It was printed in the December 2017 issues of all 12 subspecialty journals and authored by all 12 subspecialty editors. The final sentence and point was: “But the key to reducing firearm deaths in the United States is to understand and reduce exposure to the cause, just like any epidemic, and it this case that is guns.”
I beg to differ, AMA; a gun is a tool owned by millions of responsible citizens. The real key to reducing firearm deaths in the United States is to understand and reduce exposure to the real cause—evil and criminal behavior.

Unfortunately, the article was one-sided and short-sighted. No studies on the benefits of gun ownership were presented. Some benefits include personal protection or prevention of crime, often without even the need to discharge the firearm. There is a larger issue evident. The anti-Second Amendment political agenda has infiltrated all 12 editors of the 12 subspecialty journals published by the AMA. The purpose of the organization has been degraded and is plagued with negative politics. Physicians desire an organization that stands for something fairly simple to represent our profession and keep us up to date on providing the best patient care. Trust has been lost and is likely reflected by poor membership numbers of practicing physicians.

In these times, many major organizations are plagued with corruption. Most news media outlets no longer provide news, but instead offer scam reports by polished actors. I thank God one organization, the NRA, stands strong and steady with a track record of fighting for liberty, clear thinking and individual freedom for over a century.

Thank you, David, for pointing out the anti-gun bias that prevails in so many publications these days.
This medical professional isn’t alone in his opposition to the AMA’s anti-gun advocacy efforts. Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership (DRGO) is a coalition of healthcare professionals who support the Second Amendment. The group is initiating an outreach program where it will help connect patients and gun-friendly doctors. DRGO thinks that effort, 2adoc.com, will be the prescription for what ails gun owners who don’t feel comfortable if their doctor ask questions about gun ownership, especially when the provider is decidedly anti-gun. The patient portal is expected to be up and running soon.

Conceal Carry

Three million people in the United States leave their homes every day carrying a loaded firearm, according to a new survey published in the American Journal of Public Health.

The online survey of 1,444 handgun owners was conducted in April 2015 by researchers at Harvard University, Northeastern University, the University of Washington, and the University of Colorado. They estimated that of the 36 million handgun owners in the U.S., approximately 9 million (24%) carry a loaded handgun every month. Of those 9 million, roughly 3 million carry every single day (35%).

For context, the survey’s results indicate that more Americans carry a firearm than active duty military personnel in the world’s 10 strongest militaries. The Chinese military – the closest contender – boasts 2,333,000 active duty personnel, nearly 700,000 soldiers short of the American concealed carry army.

On average, more Americans are carrying firearms than visiting theme parks or professional sporting events. One million more Americans carry a handgun daily than use a wheelchair, and 2 million more Americans carry a firearm than purchase a Ford F-150 in a year.

You’re nearly as likely to meet someone who carries a handgun than to meet someone who has been to the movies in the United States.

Handguns have become a daily part of American life, but, contrary to the cries of the anti-gun lobby, our nation hasn’t descended into anarchy and chaos. More guns may not equal less crime, but they certainly don’t result in more.
That’s likely because, as the survey also found, the vast majority (82.2%) of people who carry a handgun daily do so for self-defense. These individuals aren’t looking for a fight, and they certainly aren’t looking to commit crimes. In fact, concealed carry permit holders are one of the most law-abiding demographics in the country.
The survey also determined that those who carry on a daily basis are most likely to live in suburban (46.4%) or rural (38.1%) communities. Only 15.5% of respondents indicated that they lived in urban areas.
While correlation does not equal causation, it is worth noting that crime rates in cities are much higher than in suburban or rural areas. The Brookings Institute found in 2008 that there were roughly 2,100 violent crimes per 100,000 people in U.S. cities, while suburbs saw about half that number of violent crimes.
So, while the number of people who carry handguns increases, the communities in which those people live continue to be the safest in the country. And with more states loosening restrictions on carrying handguns in public, that number is set to rise even more in the future.

Violence Against Women Is On The Rise

I was recently looking around the Internet for news on assaults against women for a research paper and came across a release by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

What are the types of violence against women?

Behaviors included in the broad category of violence against women include homicide, intimate partner abuse, psychological abuse, dating violence, same-sex violence, elder abuse, sexual assault, date rape, acquaintance rape, marital rape, stranger rape and economic abuse. The effects of this violence can negatively affect a woman’s reproductive health, as well as other aspects of her physical and mental well-being. Long-term risks include chronic pain, physical disability, drug and alcohol abuse and depression. Women with a history of physical or sexual abuse also have an increased risk for unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The vast majority of violence against females is perpetrated by males.

You can read the article by clicking on this link.

What can you do if you are assaulted and how can you protect yourself.  One way is to carry a stun gun, handgun, Taser or pepper spray or all of them. You can buy these items from www.selfdefenserocks.com and a handgun at www.tworockguns.com .  Stop by either one and have a look, doesn't hurt to look.
